While the term "seagull" is widely used, the birds commonly seen in Wisconsin are gulls, and two species are most prevalent: the Ring-billed Gull and the Herring Gull.
The Ring-billed Gull is the most common and is frequently found in urban and inland areas, often scavenging for food in parking lots, farmlands, and landfills. It is a smaller gull with yellow legs and, as its name suggests, a black ring around its bill.
The Herring Gull is larger than the Ring-billed Gull and is more typically found near large bodies of water, such as the Great Lakes. They are recognizable by their larger size, pinkish legs, and a red spot on the lower part of their bill.
These gulls are resourceful and adaptable, thriving on a diverse diet that includes fish, insects, worms, and discarded human food.
